Cleaner, greener and safer public places

A reduction of crime is not enough to make communities feel safer. Well tended open spaces, a rapid response to emerging problems, buildings designed to make crime more difficult to commit, and a uniformed presence on the streets all help to encourage a feeling of safety and increased community spirit.

Environmental crimes - like abandoned vehicles, graffiti and flytipping - are visible signs of crime which can lead to a downward spiral of decline. Neighbourhood Wardens are responsible for dealing with abandoned vehicles - most of which are removed within 24 hours of being reported. The Council's Environmental Crime Unit carry out investigations to identify and prosecute offenders responsible for flytipping and other envirocrimes.

During the year, agencies plan joint impact days across Coventry where staff and officers from police, council, housing associations and the fire service as well as residents and others will work together to cut crime and anti social behaviour in neighbourhoods.

And with the huge regeneration programmes underway across the city, work is underway to ensure new public spaces are designed in a way to make crime harder to commit and feel as safe as possible places for the public.
