Reducing the harm of illegal drugs and alcohol

Illegal drugs and alcohol are major causes of harm - both to individuals using drugs or drinking and the wider community that suffers heightened levels of crime or anti social behaviour.

The Government national drug strategy outlines the approach taken to promote recovery and reduce the harm caused by drugs and alcohol across England and Wales. Coventry's response to this strategy has:

- increased the number of drug and alcohol users in treatment. Around 1,300 drug users and 1,000 alcohol users received help in the last year. We know that treatment works and that every £1 spent on treatment saves around £4.50 in health and crime costs.

- kept wating times for treatment low - most people get the help they need within 2 weeks

- improved the effectiveness of treatment. The majority of people who leave treatment do so successfully and under 10% relapse and seek further help in the first 6 months after discharge.
