Offenders
There is a range of support to help people break out of the cycle of offending. Often, by helping people achieve a stable lifestyle through training and job skills, financial advice and support with accommodation, the need to commit crime is significantly reduced.
Some people commit crime to fund a drug or alcohol addiction. Anyone arrested for offences like burglary and car crime is automatically tested for class A drugs and, if found positive, is then referred into treatment. Magistrates will often order drug-misusing offenders to receive treatment in addition to any sentence.
Managing the handful of offenders responsible for a significant amount of crime is carried out through multi agency arrangements which may include surveillance, court orders, to attend programmes and other services including additional police activity.
Coventry also has two programmes to change the behaviour of people committing domestic violence. The Bridge is run by Relate and takes offenders on a non-mandated (not ordered by the courts) basis on a 12 week course to challenge their behaviour. The Integrated Domestic Abuse Programme is operated by Probation and provides a similar course for people ordered to attend by judges and magistrates.
