Hate crime

Hate crimes are offences motivated by racism, homophobia, transphobia or because of prejudice against disabled people. Offences are considered to be hate crimes when the victim thinks the incident to be motivated by prejudice or hatred.

Coventry has developed one of the first citywide strategies to address hate crime. this can be downloaded from this page.

Reporting centres and the Coventry Anti Harassment Forum

It is widely accepted that hate crime is under-reported. In line with the McPherson Report, a network of independent (ie. non-police) reporting centres have been established across the city. these reporting centres are based in City Council offices, housing association offices and other community venues

Reports made through the reporting centres are investigated by a multi-agency panel called the Coventry Anti Harassment Forum, made up of the City Council, Police, housing associations, Victim Support and other agencies. Measures to identify and prosecute offenders, to protect and support victims and to help prevent further incidents are planned.

Hate crime can also be reported online at www.coventry.gov.uk/hatecrime.
